Thousands of illegal immigrants and asylum seekers are detained throughout Europe, and aid organizations report deplorable living conditions and inhumane treatment at the facilities where they are held. Are there positive alternatives to detention in the effort to manage illegal immigration? Much of the research on migration policy concludes that democratic nations have little real capacity to control illegal immigration. What effect does detention have?

Flevoland – Today a CSI Crime Seed Investigation unit visited several greenhouses at the national event Come into the Greenhouse visualising what the future may look like: world's largest seed company Monsanto will check growers for the presence of suspicious crops and prevent them from using patented seeds or accuse them of patent breach. With this action A SEED wants to draw attention to the international campaign 'No Patents On Seeds' against applying patent law on seeds and animals.

EU leaders stuck on repeat post-Copenhagen

Brussels - European leaders meeting formally today for the first time since the disappointment of December's Copenhagen talks did not breathe much-needed new life into efforts to combat climate change.

No new actions were agreed at the Spring Summit which assessed the state of play post-Copenhagen. EU Heads of State merely restated their inadequate target of 20% emissions reductions by 2020 compared to 1990 levels, with a conditional offer of 30% cuts if other countries increase their commitments. These figures are not consistent with what science and climate justice demand, and will not help achieve progress in international negotiations.
