More Filipinos believe military, police behind extrajudicial killings

Awareness of the twin issues of extrajudicial killings and involuntary disappearances is growing among Filipinos, and more respondents believe that government forces are behind the killings, according to the results of the latest IBON nationwide Survey. As of October 2007, 85.5% of respondents were aware that, since 2001, unidentified persons have killed many activists, journalists and other civilians critical of the Arroyo administration. This was more than two percentage points higher than the 83% recorded in July 2007.

Poverty in the PhilippinesFollowing the death of 11-year-old Marianette Amper, poverty has once again drove another Filipino, this time a 29-year-old farmer in Butuan City, Caraga Region, southern Philippines, to commit suicide.  The victim’s lifeless body was found hanging from a tree about 100 meters from his house Friday morning.

New anti-JPEPA group slams effects on agriculture

JPEPA logoMembers of No Deal! JPEPA, Movement Against Unequal Economic Agreements, slammed the effects on agriculture of the Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement (JPEPA). In its petition, the No Deal! JPEPA states, “Farmers and agricultural workers stand to suffer even more from contract-growing arrangements with transnational agri-business corporations. Land use conversion will also affect domestic food production.”

This pressure has been enforced through strict border closures, continuous attacks and invasions and most recently a series of Israeli punitive after the Jewish state declared the region a "hostile entity" and began to cut off crucial power and fuel supplies.
